Fun family time

After a week of doctors appointments and travel we needed some fun time before heading home so to Sea World we went. We always enjoy going and are blessed to get free year long passes each year. It also gave me a chance to play with the waterproof digital camera I had gotten for Christmas. It was nice having the convenience of digital and not having to worry about it getting wet and I love the underwater shots.

I love these pics of Brae crawling across the lily pads and hippos because they float as you touch them and you get knocked off. Britt couldn't make it past the first one Brae shimmied all the way across. Good self esteem booster for him to do something that she couldn't easily. He gave me the thumbs up pic when he was done.

Next time she will use waterproof markers

We got up to go to Texas this morning and well I had to blink several times before I figured out what I was looking at in the bathroom mirror.

See I had a perfect flower on my cheek, blue hair, blue arm. My darling daughter had made me a beautiful pillowcase for mothers day. She wrote #1 Mom on it, flowers and used lots of her favorite color blue! It didn't dawn on me that she wouldn't have used the permenant fabric markers. But no she didn't so when I went to bed with my hair wet I woke up to a mess. It was actually funny and I didn't want Britt to feel bad. She is making me a new pillowcase with the right markers. Of course the markers that came off so easy during the night sure didn't want to come off this morning.

Birthday Party Fun

Pirates took over our house today for the big 10 party!

First my little pirate...

We had two cakes...
This one was a last minute decision because I was worried about the ship cake not being enough.

Blowing out the candles

The pirate gang...

He's 10!

My boy! 10 years ago I thought I still had about 12 weeks before you arrived. You decided to make your appearance early. You are a momma's boy thru and thru and that is just fine with me.

Today 10! I still can't wrap my head around it. I no longer have a baby in single digits.

You are a gift, you are wonderful, you make me laugh, you make me want to pull my hair out above all you make me thankful.

Build an ark

I think we need to be building an ark with the amount of rain we are getting. Rain rain and more rain. Instead of an ark we are building a cardboard pirate ship...I don't think it will get us far in the rain but I know the kids will have lots of fun playing in it tomorrow for Braden's birthday.

My time away for the home school conference was great. Of course it was great having friends to travel with and talk with the whole way there, into the night and back home again. I am so blessed with them. We also got to see a movie and have dinner at somewhere different all in all fun time.

Today will be spent planning for tomorrow since Brae will turn 10...eek. I am suppose to be making a pirate ship cake...I should at least go get a plan together for that since I am behind. Oh well it will all fall together...i hope.

Cross fingers, toes, pray, happy thoughts...anything else you think of...

I am leaving town this evening, without hubby or kids. I will be back Saturday. Praying, fingers crossed everything I can think of that it is uneventful until I return.

Just in the two weeks getting ready Brae has broken his nose and had strep throat. He is on his antibiotics for strep he hasn't had a fever in several days. Seizures have been well controlled. So here is hoping everything goes smooth.

I will be with 3 friends in Oklahoma City at the homeschool conference. Yeah. Also planning on seeing a movie, and going out to dinner. I am really looking forward to the break. I love planning the next school year and seeing all the new stuff.

We don't leave till this evening so I have it arranged to just spend time with the kids until then. Brae has been a little clingier than normal knowing I would be gone. I think it will all go well and I know they will have great daddy time with way more video games than they should!

This and that

I am getting ready to leave the kids for 2 days with hubby. So of course Brae had to get sick. Actually I am glad to do it a few days before I leave instead of the day before or while I am gone. Hubby is wonderful but dealing with Brae's medical issues is not an area he really steps up in, as he has never administered his seizure medicine. Brae has severe fever induced seizures so things like strep throat, etc not so good around here. Of course that is what we have is strep throat! I took him in as soon as he started a low grade fever and complaining so we are on antibiotics and hopefully by the time I leave Thursday he will at least be done with any fevers which will significantly lower seizure probability.

Brae is also not so sure about this whole Mom leaving thing. I will be gone about 48 hours and he has been super clingy since he found out. I know he will have fun with Britt and dad once I am gone. They are planning a video game competition marathon.

Britt is growing up so much and while part of me hates it another part is really loving this girl who wants to run errands, and shop with me, and eat lunch with and have talks.

I am going to a home school conference in Oklahoma City with 3 friends. So excited. We leave Thursday evening and will be back Saturday evening. Plan to do lots of home school shopping which is so fun to us, and catch the movie "All My Past Girlfriends".

Next week will be a busy one as my baby turns 10! How did it happen that I no longer have one in single digits. I am planning a pirate party, complete with cardboard pirate ship to play in and a cake with cannons! Then two days later a huge end of the year sleepover for girl scouts, luckily doing that at a hotel but still planning it.

I am ready for the break to Oklahoma City, I know I will miss the kids, but I will also enjoy myself and love bringing surprises back home to them. Brae has reminded me that school books are not acceptable surprises...LOL.

Sharks and Rabbits

Well Sharks and Rabbits don't go together but I am behind on posting pics so I guess for the purpose of catching up on posting they will.

Yesterday we went to the aquarium for homeschool day as always we had fun. Love this pic of Britt looking up at the shark in the tunnel.

Outside the aquarium there is a alligator statue so of course my son had to stick his head in it.

Britt said I had to show some of the baby rabbits. The kids now have 21 baby rabbits in addition to their three adult rabbits. Thankfully they are all kept at Nana and Papa's.

Soccer

We had to divide up today, Hubby going one way and me the other with Brae to the soccer field. Brae said "Soccer is my life" pause "oh and my family and video games".

They won their game but I don't like shut out games won by that much. I start rooting for the other team.

Looking Back Again

I am actually gaining on my to do list so this evening I have been just sitting in the living room watching the kids play a game and going thru the archives of my blog. Trying to put labels on everything so it will be easier. Of course would have been easier to do before I let it get to over 900 posts without labels. Oh well I am enjoying going through them since it goes back to 2004 I am finding lots of things I had forgotten or am laughing about again.

Speaking of laughing about again. I found this post from Braden he would have been about 7 at the time.

********************
06/29/06
Braden was so tired. Getting up and around. He goes into the bathroom and I am getting Britt's hair stuff. He sits down and says "This morning mom I am just going to sit and pee like a girl because I am just too tired for boy peeing".

Park pics

Saturday was beautiful and so we took the kids to Woodward Park in Tulsa, it was so pretty all in bloom, we saw brides getting their wedding photos done, graduates, and lots of babies. We just snapped some with our camera. Britt was a little more cooperative than her brother but that is normal.

a fun day at home

We did school, we baked, we decorated eggs, we STAYED HOME...no errands no running. Nice nice day!

I had looked at the calendar this week and knew we better get eggs decorated so got that off the ever growing list of things to do.

The rest of the Love Dare days

Day 30 - LOVE BRINGS UNITY
Isolate one area of division in your marriage, and look on today as a fresh opportunity to pray about it. Ask the Lord to reveal anything in your own heart that is threatening oneness with your spouse. Pray that he would do the same for them. And if appropriate, discuss this matter openly, seeking God for unity.

DAY 31 - LOVE AND MARRIAGE
Is there a "leaving" issue you haven't been brave enough to conquer yet? Confess it to your spouse today, and resolve to make it right. The oneness of your marriage is dependent upon it. Follow this with a commitment to your spouse and to God to make your marriage the top priority over every other human relationship.

DAY 32 - LOVE MEETS SEXUAL NEEDS
If at all possible, try to initiate sex with your husband or wife today. Do this in a way that honors what your spouse has told you (or implied to you) about what they need from you sexually. Ask God to make this enjoyable for both of you as well as a path to greater intimacy.

DAY 33 - LOVE COMPLETES EACH OTHER
Recognize that your spouse is integral to your future success. Let them know today that you desire to include them in your upcoming decisions, and that you need their perspective and counsel. If you have ignored their input in the past, admit your oversight and ask them forgive you.

DAY 34 - LOVE CELEBRATES GODLINESS
Find a specific, recent example when your spouse demonstrated Christian character in a noticeable way. Verbally commend them for this at some point today.

DAY 35 - LOVE IS ACCOUNTABLE
Find a marriage mentor - someone who is a strong Christian and who will be honest and loving with you. If you feel that counseling is needed, then take the first step to set up an appointment. During this process, ask God to direct your decisions and discernment. (We decided not to do this but to instead pledge to do or go to two marriage enrichment activities).

DAY 36 - LOVE IS GOD'S WORD
Commit to reading the Bible everyday. Find a devotional book or other resource that will give you some guidance. If your spouse is open to it, see if they will commit to daily Bible reading with you. Begin submitting each area of your life to its guidance and start building on the rock.

DAY 37 - LOVE AGREES IN PRAYER
Ask your spouse if you can begin praying together. Talk about the best time to do this, whether it's in the morning, your lunch hour, or before bedtime. Use this time to commit your concerns, disagreements, and needs before the Lord. Don't forget to thank Him for His provision and blessing. Even if your spouse refuses to do this, resolve to spend this daily time in prayer yourself.

DAY 38 - LOVE FULFILLS DREAMS
Ask yourself what your mate would want if it was obtainable. Commit this to prayer, and start mapping out a plan for meeting some (if not all) of their desires, to whatever level you possibly can.

DAY 39 - LOVE ENDURES
Spend time in personal prayer, then write a letter of commitment and resolve to your spouse. Include why you are committing to this marriage until death, and that you have purposed to love them no matter what. Leave it in a place that your mate will find it.

DAY 40 - LOVE IS A COVENANT
Write out a renewal of your vows and place them in your home. Perhaps, if appropriate, you could make arrangements to formally renew your wedding vows before a minister and with family present. Make it a living testament to the value of marriage in God's eyes and the high honor of being one with your mate.

Easter Foods

I plan on posting more fun foods. These two were the only pics I came across on this computer. So I need to do some digging and come up with my others.

First....Chick Deviled Eggs

Instead of laying the egg long ways and cutting it you will hold it upright and cut it. Then you can make it look more jagged (like the shell cracking) make your deviled egg mix as you normally would. Fill the larger side with egg mix (you may want to cut the bottom so that they will stand up well) then use a piece of chopped carrot for the beak and sliced olives for the eyes (I have used both black and green olives before) and place the other "shell" on top.

Next....Spring Bonnets

The kids love doing these. I use large sugar cookies and mini muffins lots of icing and whatever decorations I want. Put the mini muffin upside down on the cookie using a dab of icing. Then frost the entire cookie and muffin so that it looks like a bonnet. We usually use several bowls with different colors and then use fruit roll ups, sprinkles, mini m&m's etc to decorate.

Broke

Here is a pic of Tex with his cast on. For those that don't know last Friday Brae accidentally stepped on Tex and broke his leg. Brae was sooooo upset about it even though it was a total accident and I think we have all stepped on him at one point or another. Brae still tells him he is sorry almost everyday. But I can tell Tex is feeling better and is hobbling around really good.

Love Dare

Hubby and I had taken a break from our Love Dare book since I was in Austin last week. I could really tell a difference with us not doing it. Mostly in my own attitude. Today's spoke to me as I had woke up to a mess and things like that have the power to set the mood of the day for me. If you have missed some of the previous days they are starting with the first and going to the latest here, here,
herehere,here,here, andhere.

DAY 25 LOVE FORGIVES
WHATEVER YOU HAVEN'T FORGIVEN IN YOUR MARE, FORGIVE IT TODAY. LET IT GO. JUST AS WE ASK JESUS TO "FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS: EACH DAY, WE MUST ASK HIM TO HELP US "FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS" EACH DAY AS WELL. UNFORGIVENESS HAS BEEN KEEPING YOU AND YOUR SPOUSE IN PRISON TOO LONG. SAY FROM YOUR HEART, "I CHOOSE TO FORGIVE."
What did you forgive your spouse for today? How long have you been carrying the weight of it? What are the possibilities now that you've released this matter to God?

DAY 26 LOVE IS RESPONSIBLE
TAKE TIME TO PRAY THROUGH YOUR AREAS OF WRONGDOING. ASK FOR GOD'S FORGIVENESS, THEN HUMBLE YOURSELF ENOUGH TO ADMIT THEM TO YOUR SPOUSE. DO IT SINCERELY AND TRUTHFULLY. ASK YOUR SPOUSE FOR FORGIVENESS AS WELL. NO MATTER HOW THEY RESPOND, MAKE SURE YOU COVER YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IN LOVE. EVEN IF THEY RESPOND WITH CRITICISM, ACCEPT IT BY RECEIVING IT AS COUNSEL.
What does your mate need to see in order to believe that your confession was more than just words?

DAY 27 LOVE ENCOURAGES
ELIMINATE THE POISON OF UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS IN YOUR HOME. THINK OF ONE AREA WHERE YOUR SPOUSE HAS TOLD YOU YOU'RE EXPECTING TOO MUCH, AND TELL THEM YOU'RE SORRY FOR BEING SO HARD ON THEM ABOUT IT. PROMISE THEM YOU'LL SEEK TO UNDERSTAND, AND ASSURE THEM OF YOUR UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
When you place high expectations on your spouse that they don't feel internally motivated to attain, what does that tell you about yourself? What are some better ways to deal with these disconnects?

DAY 28 LOVE MAKES SACRIFICES
WHAT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST NEEDS IN YOUR SPOUSE'S LIFE RIGHT NOW? IS THERE A NEED YOU COULD LIFE FROM THEIR SHOULDERS TODAY BY A DARING ACT OF SACRIFICE ON YOUR PART? WHETHER THE NEED IS A BIG OR SMALL, PURPOSE TO DO WHAT YOU CAN TO MEET THE NEED.
How much of your mate's stress is caused by your lack of concern or initiative> When you expressed a desire to help, how did they receive it? Are there other needs you could meet?

DAY 29 LOVE'S MOTIVATION
BEFORE YOU SEE YOUR SPOUSE AGAIN TODAY, PRAY FOR THEM BY NAME AND FOR THEIR NEEDS. WHETHER IT COMES EASY FOR YOU OR NOT, SAY "I LOVE YOU," THEN EXPRESS LOVE TO THEM IN SOME TANGIBLE WAY. GO TO GOD IN PRAYER AGAIN, THANKING HIM FOR GIVING YOU THE PRIVILEGE OF LOVING THIS ONE SPECIAL PERSON - UNCONDITIONALLY, THE WAY HE LOVES BOTH OF YOU.
How will this change of motivation affect your relationship and reactions? What does this inspire you to do? What does it inspire you to do? What does it inspire you to stop doing?

Brae talking about the future.

This post is especially for my friend Stephanie!

First a little history...a while back my friend Stephanie was joking around that Brae had to marry one of her girls but that he had to be good at computers like his daddy. Well that resulted in Brae crying that night that he just wanted to be friends with them he didn't want to marry them. So I assured him he didn't have to and we have all laughed about it since.

Okay now to the present my conversation with Brae in the car on the way home.

Brae: Mom I think I know what I want to be when I grow up but you are not allowed to talk about it to anyone.
Me: Why what is it?
Brae: A computer programmer that makes video games.
Me: That would be great why can't I tell anyone.
Brae: You can tell everyone but Ms. Stephanie.
Me: Okay why not Ms. Stephanie.
Brae: (sighing that sigh that says how could you not already know this mom)
Because I sure don't want her to know I am doing something with computers she will start all that wedding talk again. (then he does this shuddering movement).

It was so funny. I did assure him that even if he did do something with computers he could still pick who he wanted to marry (I told him I still got final approval though..lol).

Horse riding lessons

Britt had her first horseback riding lessons today. I had to miss it because of taking Brae to Austin but her daddy took lots of pics. She loved her instructor.

Kid free night!

Tonight my parents are being wonderful and taking not only our two kids but two of their friends as well to spend the night at the farm. Mom plans on letting them work (fun work like painting an old metal desk, and spreading mulch...or she says it is fun anyway...lol).

So we will be kid free tonight and we are looking so forward to it. We needed a break before Brae and I leave for Austin this weekend. We are meeting our friends (parents of the two kids that are also going to Nana and Papa's) for dinner at Olive Garden. Then hubby and I will do the romantic thing we always do when we are kid free.....go shopping at Target and Books a Million. Awww to walk around the store at our own pace and look at everything. Of course we always end up shopping for them when they aren't with us but we sure enjoy it. Then home for some alone time. We know the kids will have a great time having their friends at mom and dads so they can show off the rabbits and lots of room to run and play.

Science Fair

Today was the science fair with our home school group.
It was fun.
Britt didn't place but enjoyed her project. Brae however got 1st place and was SO excited. Britt was excited for him she lifted him in a big hug.

Looking back

I think every now and then that I will stop blogging for several different reasons busy times being one. I decided I needed to organize my archives...I didn't remember starting this blog in 2004...wow 5 years.

I read just the first few one of them being this one:

Heartbreak
I think I actually felt my heartbreak last night. As you know if you know us or have read my blog my son Braden is 5 and has had serious medical issues and has a significant delay with his speech. While being tested he is so smart it is the articulation or pronunciation that comes out somewhat garbled.
Anyway to last night.
I am sitting watching cartoons with the kids and Braden crawls on my lap and says "Mom I am weird". I said no your not. Brittney then pipes up and says "Mom I told him to talk to you because he said he is weird cause he cant talk good"...(have I mentioned before my 1st grader is way too smart). I thanked Brittney for telling him to talk to me and I took Braden in the office to sit on the couch in there. His eyes look like he is about to cry. I asked him why he thought he was weird. He said "Colton says I cant talk so I am weird". I wanted to cry, yes he is very hard to understand especially if you are not around him, for example he doesnt say the t sound so pick up truck is pick up uck and so on and on with other letters too.
I tried to explain to him that he wasnt weird but that he was special because of how sick he used to be and how much better he is getting. I tried to tell him that he was so smart and that he was getting better and talking everyday.
He seemed happier when we were done, but I sat there a while longer after he went back to his cartoons just thinking. I know kids are cruel I knew in my head that this time would be coming as he got into school but my heart wasnt ready to see those tears and try to ease his hurt.
I cant explain to him that he is 5 and that he has beaten the odds since he was born 11 weeks early, he has beaten them when a mass was found in the brain, then not just one mass but 4 and all removed, he has beaten them by being one of the smartest and brightest kids in his class while having 30 to 50 staring out seizures each day. He has beaten them by being happy and his dimple smile that melts hearts. But he is 5 and doesnt understand this all he understands is another 5 year old boy says he was weird. Yes my heart definitely broke a little with this conversation.

So no I am going to keep blogging. I need to look back and read sometimes to see how far we have come and reinforce reasons that we have made the life choices we have made. I am going to try to organize the posts into categories...eek over 950 posts I should have done this long ago. Also want to find some of my food posts to repost. So I am not going anywhere. I may post a few old stories now and then while I go through. I don't know why the above story spoke to me so this morning but it did.

Now onto a busy day suppose to be super warm again today and then cold again this weekend..ugh.

My son the king of the drama

I can truly not express how funny my son is.

This morning we are home and hubby is at church. Brittney is my one not feeling well with allergies. Well I started lunch which was pork chops with a onion soup in the electric skillet. Braden smelled it and I told him what it was and oh boy. His big thing is "call the cops" anytime you are making him do something he says "call the cops". So it started with "Senna call the cops" that didn't work so he took my phone and called his nana, papa, aunt, and tried to call the dad of one of his friends. Yep and he told them all I was feeding him poison. He is full of it this morning energy energy and more energy he is wearing me out when he isn't playing dead on the floor or hiding in my closet calling people he is attacking me with nerf weapons. I won't complain though because it is so much better than when he is sick. But Britt had it right when she said we need to put that boy in some drama classes because he is the king of drama! He is everything is so theatrical with him but he is cute so I guess we will let him get away with it. And yes I am still making him eat the "poison" for lunch...LOL.

Catching up on the Love Dare

Day 17 LOVE PROMOTES INTIMACY
Determine to guard your mate's secrets (unless they are dangerous to them or to you) and to pray for them. Talk with your spouse, and resolve to demonstrate love in spite of these issues. Really listen to them when they share personal thoughts and struggles with you. Make them feel safe. We should reach out to our spouse in grace and understanding, accepting them for who they are and assuring them that their secrets are safe with us.

DAY 18 LOVE SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND
Prepare a special dinner at home, just for the two of you. The dinner can be as nice as you prefer. Focus this time on getting to know your spouse better, perhaps in areas you've rarely talked about. Determine to make it an enjoyable evening for you and your mate. Make your spouse your chosen field of study.

DAY 19 LOVE IS IMPOSSIBLE
Look back over the dares from previous days. Were there some that seemed impossible to you? Have you realized your need for God to change your heart and to give you the ability to love? Ask him to show you where you stand with him, and ask fro the strength and grace to settle your eternal destination.

DAY 20 LOVE IS JESUS CHRIST
Date to take God at his word. Date to trust Jesus Christ for salvation. Date to pay, "Lord Jesus, I'm a sinner. Buy you have shown your love for me by dying to forgive my sins, and you have proven your power to save me from death by your resurrection. Lord, change my heart, and save me by your grace."

DAY 21 LOVE IS SATISFIED IN GOD
Be intentional today about making a time to pray and read your bible. Try reading a chapter out of proverbs each day (there are thirty-one - a full month's supply), or reading a chapter in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). As you do, immerse yourself int eh love and promises God has for you. This will add to your growth as you walk with Him.

DAY 22 LOVE IS FAITHFUL
Love is a choice not a feeling. It is an initiated action, not a knee jerk reaction. Choose today to be committed to love even if your spouse has lost most of their interest in receiving it. Say to them today in words similar to these, "I love you. Period. I choose to love you even if you don't love me in return".
I think this is so important. One thing that I have really learned from this is to lead not follow your heart. That it is so much a part of a choice. As I told hubby he may drive me crazy, I may count to 10, and bite my tongue but I choose to love him and I am proud of that choice I choose to love him for always.

DAY 23 LOVE ALWAYS PROTECTS
Remove anything that is hindering your relationship, and addiction or influence that's stealing your affections and turning your heart away from your spouse.

DAY 24 LOVE VS. LUST
End it now. Identify every object of lust in your life and remove it. Single out every lie you've swallowed in pursuing forbidden pleasure and reject it. Lust cannot be allowed to live in a back bedroom. It must be killed and destroyed-today-replaced with the sure promises of God and a heart filled with his perfect love.

DAY 25 LOVE FORGIVES
Whatever you haven't forgiven in your mate, forgive it today. Let it go. Just as we ask Jesus to "forgive us our debts" each day, we must ask him to help us "forgive our debtors" each day as well. Unforgivness has been keeping you and your spouse in prison too long. Say from your heart, "I choose to forgive".

DAY 25 LOVE IS RESPONSIBLE
Take time to pray through your areas of wrongdoing. Ask for God's forgiveness, then humble yourself enough to admit them to your spouse. Do it sincerely and truthfully. Ask your spouse for forgiveness as well. No matter how they respond, make sure you cover your responsibility in love. Even if they respond with criticism, accept it by receiving it as counsel.

We are truly enjoying this and both growing and changing as is our relationship. I truly believed we were strong and had a good marriage before but this is strengthening and helping in so many ways.

Soccer has started.

Soccer season is here!
A game today and a game tomorrow.
Brae did wonderful especially when you consider it was his first game ever.
He looks so much taller than his teammates but they are all the same age.
His team won 5-2.

Girls Night and More Love Dare

Last night hubby took Brae to scouts so Britt and I had girls time. She is growing up so much I love that her favorite thing to do is spend time with her mom. I know that won't always be so I will enjoy it now. We did facials, manicures, pedicures and conditioners for our hair while watching a girl movie. It was funny when the guys came back she had to have her brother and dad feel her hair how soft, and look at her nails. All in all a fun night that we need to do more often.

Hubby and I are still SO enjoying Love Dare. If you would have asked before I would have said we had a pretty strong marriage and that it was solid. But wow after two weeks I can see a difference it is even BETTER! I can't explain it but it makes you so much more aware of just little off the cuff comments and holding your tongue. I am very happy that we have given this our all and really put the effort into it.

DAY 14 LOVE TAKES DELIGHT
Purposefully neglect an activity you would normally do so you can spend quality time with your spouse. Do something he or she would love to do or a project they'd really like to work on. Just be together.

DAY 15 LOVE IS HONORABLE
Choose a way to show honor and respect to your spouse that is above your normal routine. It may be holding the door for her. It might be putting his clothes away for him. It may be the way you listen and speak in your communication. Show your mate that he or she is highly esteemed in your eyes.

DAY 16 LOVE INTERCEDES
Begin praying today for your spouse's hear. Pray for three specific areas where you desire for God to work in your spouse's life and in your marriage.

Love Dare days 10-13

We are continuing the Love Dare book and it is just wonderful I can't say enough good things about it.

Day 10: LOVE IS UNCONDITIONAL
Do something out of the ordinary today for your spouse- something that proves (to you and them) taht your love is based on your choice and nothing else. Wash her car. Clean the kitchen. Buy his favorite dessert. Fold the laundry demonstrate love to them for the sheer joy of being their partner in marriage.
The only way love can last a lifetime is if it's unconditional. The truth is this: love is not determined by the one being loved but rather by the one choosing to love.

DAY 11: LOVE CHERISHES
What need does your spouse have that you could meet today? Can you run an errand? Give a back rub or foot massage? Is there any housework you could help with? Choose a gesture that says, "I cherish you" and do it with a smile.

DAY 12: LOVE LETS THE OTHER WIN
Demonstrate love by willingly choosing to give in to an area of disagreement between you and your spouse. Tell them you are putting their preference first.

DAY 13: LOVE FIGHTS FAIR. Talk with your spouse about establishing healthy rules of engagement. If your mater is not ready for this, then write out your own personal rules to "fight" by. Resolve to abide by them when the next disagreement occurs.

If you need a giggle

Check out one of my new favorite blogs CAKE WRECKS.
It is so funny I am always making hubby come look at it. Basically it is a blog about professional cakes that go horribly wrong. Her writing about them is as funny if not funnier than the pictures sometimes.
Some of my favs are Inspiration vs Perspiration. It is actual photos brides have taken in for their wedding cakes and what they actually got. You have to keep in mind these are professional cakes. If she ever features one that is not professional she says it so most all of these cakes cost money! In some cases of the brides there have been lawsuits filed.
Just a fun break to look at the site and read her witty commentary and marvel that people could actually do that. Some of my favorites are the ones where they took the order over the phone and took it quite literal.

Capitol Day

Yesterday we got to attend homeschool day at the capitol in Little Rock. It was very interesting. The kids enjoyed it and so did I. Very informative. Britt is already talking about wanting to be one of the kids that volunteer for the day when the house of representatives is in session. You have to be 12 and basically you run messages from one rep to the other, fetch water, etc. The lady said it looked good on applications so we will keep that in mind for her.

Here are some snap shots:

Weekend wrap up and more Love Dare days

It was a busy weekend. We got and sorted girl scout cookies. Now the fun of delivering..ugh my least favorite part. We had basketball and soccer. Basketball tournament is this week. Brae continues to amaze us with his soccer. Even asking to run extra. He is also so good he told the coach that he could not do the drill where they were using their heads. There are only a few boys on the team that do it as they don't really even want it at this age. I was still proud of him that he knew and talked to the coach (of course we already had). The asking to run extra is so not a Brae thing just shows how much he is loving it.

We all discussed the week doing our Love Dare books during Sunday School. It is interesting to see how different couples are doing the different days and how it is affecting the different couples.

Day 7 LOVE BELIEVES THE BEST - For today's dare, get two sheets of paper. Ont eh first one, spend a few minutes writing out positive things about your spouse. Then do the same with negative things on the second sheet. Place both sheets in a secret place for another day. There is a different purpose and plan for each. At some point during the remainder of the day pick a positive attribute from the first list and thank your spouse for having this characteristic.

(A few of the positive attributes I put were how much he loves us, his loyalty and faithfulness, how he helps me around the house even when I am critical of how he does it (I am working on that). His negatives he knows what they are his lack of patience at times and his bad memory. The positives FAR out weigh any negatives)

Day 8 LOVE IS NOT JEALOUS - Determine to become your spouse's biggest fan and to reject and thoughts of jealousy. To help set your heart on your spouse and focus on their achievements, take yesterday's list of negative attributes and discreetly burn it. Then share with your spouse how glad you are about a success he or she recently enjoyed.

(I hadn't printed out the list so I deleted it off the computer. One thing this study is really helping me with is showing me how much those little negative thoughts can cause issues. There are so many areas which I think he is successful including the kids but one that relates to business is what I am going to share. Hubby's annual review was recently and his company has a hiring freeze and so we weren't expecting much but he received almost the top raise available. I thought that was great because everyone is cutting back and I thought it showed a lot that he still got such a high review. Of course I am proud in a million areas!)

Tomorrow is our day 9 but I wanted to go ahead and post it because the kids and I will be gone all day tomorrow to home school day at the capital.

Day 9 LOVE MAKES GOOD IMPRESSIONS Think of a specific way you'd like to greet your spouse today. Do it with a smile and enthusiasm. Then determine to change your greeting to reflect your love for them.

Day 6

I am excited that several have said they are going to do the Love Dare too. Also hubby found a free online 40 day Love Dare HERE.

Day 6 - LOVE IS NOT IRRITABLE
Choose today to react to tough circumstances in your marriage in loving ways instead of with irritation. Begin by making a list below of areas where you need to add margin to your schedule. Then list any wrong motivations that you need to release from your life.

Okay I am going to have to think on this one. I will probably wait till this evening when I can fully concentrate instead of right now when I am planning the day of girl scout cookies, basketball and soccer out in my head.

Love Dare day 5 - updated

I had forgot to put the title for the day on before so here it is.

Day 5 LOVE IS NOT RUDE
Ask your spouse to tell you three things that cause him or her to be uncomfortable or irritated with you. You must do so without attacking them or justifying your behavior. This is for their perspective only.

I had joked about this one telling hubby I was going to single space type the list out in 3 pages or less. All in all it is a tough one actually. I don't like hearing things about myself. I did agree and see where the things he listed about me are true. I am sure my close friends will agree with number 1 which was him not liking that I don't say no on things and continue to commit. All in all it was a good exercise for us and there are areas I need to work on.

Love Dare days 1-4

I am going to share in more detail the Love Dare program. But I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting the book. I think Sams Club Warehouse sells it for around $9.00. We each have our own so that we can write in the journal spaces. I am just paraphrasing as there are about 3 pages to read for each day and then a paragraph of summary for each day.

Day 1: LOVE IS PATIENT - For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to say nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It's better to hold your tongue than to say something you'll regret. (I was shocked at how many times I caught myself just going to "correct" something he did, or smart off...eeek not proud of that and wow I am on day 5 of really weighing the words and I can tell a difference in both of us.)

Day 2: LOVE IS KIND - In addition to saying nothing negative to your spouse again today, do at least one unexpected gesture as an act of kindness. (This day started getting fun for us both we liked finding something to do. Hubby cleaned my car, which really needed it. I brought him a Hershey bar and a coke back to the office, and a shoulder rub)

Day 3: LOVE IS NOT SELFISH - Whatever you put your time, energy, and money into will become more important to you. It's hard to care for something you are not investing in. Along with restraining from negative comments, buy your spouse something that says, "I was thinking of you today". (Hubby loves a certain Bible Archeology Magazine but he says it is too much to put out so I ordered that for him and sent him an email with a poem in it (poems are so not me normally). He surprised me with a book I had been wanting and a Green Tea Frap from Starbucks. Little things but meant a lot.)

DAY 4: LOVE IS THOUGHTFUL - Contact your spouse sometime during the business day. Have no agenda other than asking how he or she is doing and if there is anything you could do for them. (We do this quite often anyway, all the time though you are still refraining from any negative comments. We shared when I would have said something negative and both laughed at how silly the things were.)

Love Dare

Our Sunday School class started the bible study based of the movie Fireproof.

We are using the Love Dare book from the movie. Hubby and I are in day 5. It is wonderful. I think we have a strong marriage but wow this is really pointing out some little things and just all around making us appreciate each other more. It is 40 days long. Hopefully these things will stick with us way past the end of the book.

Today for no reason I got a Starbucks green tea frap in the middle of the day along with a book I have been wanting....also a promise to take the kids out for a few hours one evening to the library or a dollar movie so that I can have some quiet time.

I highly recommend the book it really makes you think and I can see it strengthening our marriage even more.

Autism

I received this via an email and I figured I would post it. It is really good information about autism. While Braden is very high functioning on the scale so much of this still applies to him. He has so many issues that sometimes autism gets pushed to the back but I find he does SO much better when I am implementing autism therapies and ideas to his day. I put my own notes in parenthesis.

Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew

by Ellen Notbohm

Some days it seems the only predictable thing about it is the
unpredictability. The only consistent attribute -- the inconsistency
There is little argument on any level but that autism is baffling, even
to those who spend their lives around it. The child who lives with
autism may look "normal" but his behavior can be perplexing and
downright difficult. (I try to really watch having a judgmental thought about a kid having a fit while he may be doing just that he may not as well I have a good friend who it is a nightmare for her to take her son to the store as he does not do well and she is constantly looked down on. Braden still has an occasional melt down but not to the degree he did in his preschool years.)

Autism was once thought an "incurable" disorder, but that notion is
crumbling in the face knowledge and understanding that is increasing as
you read this. Every day, individuals with autism are showing us that
they can overcome, compensate for and otherwise manage many of autism's
most challenging aspects. Equipping those around our children with
simple understanding of autism's most basic elements has a tremendous
impact on their ability to journey towards productive, independent
adulthood.

Autism is an extremely complex disorder but for this article we can
distill it to what I call The Big Three: sensory processing challenges,
speech/language delays and impairments, and whole child/social
interaction issues. And though these three elements may be common to
many children with ASD, we also must keep front-of-mind that no two (or
ten or twenty) will be alike. For every child: a different spot on the
spectrum. And, just as importantly - for every parent and teacher, a
different spot on the spectrum.

Here are ten things every child with autism wishes you knew:

1. I am first and foremost a child -- a child with autism. I am not
primarily "autistic." My autism is only one aspect of my total
character. It does not define me as a person. Are you a person with
thoughts, feelings and many talents, or are you just fat (overweight),
myopic (wear glasses) or klutzy (uncoordinated, not good at sports)?

As an adult, you have some control over how you define yourself. If you
want to single out a single characteristic, you can make that known. As
a child, I am still unfolding. Neither you nor I yet know what I may be
capable of. Defining me by one characteristic runs the danger of setting
up an expectation that may be too low. And if I get a sense that you
don't think I "can do it," my natural response will be: Why try?

Sensory integration may be the most difficult aspect of autism to
understand, but it is arguably the most critical.

2. My sensory perceptions are disordered. This means that the ordinary
sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches of everyday that you may not
even notice can be downright painful for me. The very environment in
which I have to live often seems hostile. I may appear withdrawn or
belligerent to you but I am really just trying to defend myself. Here
is why a "simple" trip to the grocery store may be hell for me:

My hearing may be hyper-acute. Dozens of people are talking at once.
The loud speaker booms today's special. Musak whines from the sound
system. Cash registers beep and cough, a coffee grinder is chugging.
The meat cutter screeches, babies wail, carts creak, the fluorescent
lighting hums. My brain can't filter all the input and I'm in overload!

My sense of smell may be highly sensitive. The fish at the meat counter
isn't quite fresh, the guy standing next to us hasn't showered today,
the deli is handing out sausage samples, the baby in line ahead of us
has a poopy diaper, they're mopping up pickles on aisle 3 with
ammonia....I can't sort it all out; I'm too nauseous.

Because I am visually oriented (see more on this below), this may be my
first sense to become overstimulated. The fluorescent light is too
bright; it makes the room pulsate and hurts my eyes. Sometimes the
pulsating light bounces off everything and distorts what I am seeing --
the space seems to be constantly changing. There's glare from windows,
too many items for me to be able to focus (I may compensate with "tunnel
vision"), moving fans on the ceiling, so many bodies in constant motion.
All this affects my vestibular sense, and now I can't even tell where my
body is in space.

(Brae still struggles with this not near to the degree he used to. I remember being so proud when he was 3 years old and touched foam soap for the first time ever, and played with finger paints after months of therapy. Most times he just goes for it but there are times he hangs back with the messes or gets messy and then must immediately be cleaned or a melt down will ensue. He does well in most social situations but he does still get overstimulated.)

Receptive and expressive language and vocabulary can be major
challenges:

3. Please remember to distinguish between won't (I choose not to) and
can't (I am not able to).

It isn't that I don't listen to instructions. It's that I can't
understand you. When you call to me from across the room, this is what I
hear: "*&^%$#@, Billy. #$%^*&^%$&*........." Instead, come speak
directly to me in plain words: "Please put your book in your desk,
Billy. It's time to go to lunch." This tells me what you want me to do
and what is going to happen next. Now it is much easier for me to
comply.

4. I am a concrete thinker. This means I interpret language very
literally. It's very confusing for me when you say, "Hold your horses,
cowboy!" when what you really mean is "Please stop running." Don't tell
me something is a "piece of cake" when there is no dessert in sight and
what you really mean is "this will be easy for you to do." When you say
"It's pouring cats and dogs," I see pets coming out of a pitcher.
Please just tell me "It's raining very hard."

Idioms, puns, nuances, double entendres and sarcasm are lost on me.

(This is SO true with Braden to this day, he is very literal he takes things as you say them not as they might be meant.)

5. Please be patient with my limited vocabulary. It's hard for me to
tell you what I need when I don't know the words to describe my
feelings. I may be hungry, frustrated, frightened or confused but right
now those words are beyond my ability to express. Be alert for body
language, withdrawal, agitation or other signs that something is wrong.

Or, there's a flip side to this: I may sound like a "little professor"
or movie star, rattling off words or whole scripts well beyond my
developmental age. These are messages I have memorized from the world
around me to compensate for my language deficits because I know I am
expected to respond when spoken to. They may come from books, TV, the
speech of other people. It is called "echolalia." I don't necessarily
understand the context or the terminology I'm using. I just know that
it gets me off the hook for coming up with a reply.

6. Because language is so difficult for me, I am very visually
oriented. Please show me how to do something rather than just telling
me. And please be prepared to show me many times. Lots of consistent
repetition helps me learn.

(He does better with school work and just about anything if he is visually shown rather than told.)

A visual schedule is extremely helpful as I move through my day. Like
your day-timer, it relieves me of the stress of having to remember what
comes next, makes for smooth transition between activities, helps me
manage my time and meet your expectations. Here's a great website for
learning more about visual schedules:
www.cesa7.k12.wi.us/sped/autism/structure/str11.htm.

(We haven't done this in years but it was very helpful in the preschool years)

Don't let autism cause you to lose sight of the whole child.
Self-esteem is crucial.

7. Please focus and build on what I can do rather than what I can't do.
Like any other human, I can't learn in an environment where I'm
constantly made to feel that I'm not good enough and that I need
"fixing." Trying anything new when I am almost sure to be met with
criticism, however "constructive," becomes something to be avoided.
Look for my strengths and you will find them. There is more than one
"right" way to do most things.

8. Please help me with social interactions. It may look like I don't
want to play with the other kids on the playground, but sometimes it's
just that I simply do not know how to start a conversation or enter a
play situation. If you can encourage other children to invite me to
join them at kickball or shooting baskets, it may be that I'm delighted
to be included.

9. Try to identify what triggers my meltdowns. Meltdowns, blow-ups,
tantrums or whatever you want to call them are even more horrid for me
than they are for you. They occur because one or more of my senses has
gone into overload. If you can figure out why my meltdowns occur, they
can be prevented. Keep a log noting times, settings, people,
activities. A pattern may emerge.

10. If you are a family member, please love me unconditionally. Banish
thoughts like, "If he would just......" and "Why can't she....." You
did not fulfill every last expectation your parents had for you and you
wouldn't like being constantly reminded of it. I did not choose to have
autism. But remember that it is happening to me, not you. Without your
support, my chances of successful, self-reliant adulthood are slim.
With your support and guidance, the possibilities are broader than you
might think. I promise you - I am worth it.

And finally, three words: Patience. Patience. Patience. Work to view
my autism as a different ability rather than a disability. Look past
what you may see as limitations and see the gifts autism has given me.
It may be true that I'm not good at eye contact or conversation, but
have you noticed that I don't lie, cheat at games, tattle on my
classmates or pass judgment on other people? Also true that I probably
won't be the next Michael Jordan. But with my attention to fine detail
and capacity for extraordinary focus, I might be the next Einstein. Or
Mozart. Or Van Gogh.

They had autism too.

The answer to Alzheimer's, the enigma of extraterrestrial life -- what
future achievements from today's children with autism, children like me,
lie ahead?

All that I might become won't happen without you as my foundation.
Think through some of those societal 'rules' and if they don't make
sense for me, let them go. Be my advocate, be my friend, and we'll see
just how far I can go.

Straight Hair

I tried to go back to curly hair. I really did. I just can't do it. Takes too much time. My hair is naturally curly I am talking curly tight curls. 5 years ago I started straightening it. I get it done every 8 months. I had thought okay I will let it grow and get the straightner stripped out. But it has been driving me insane. Luckily the girl who does it made me a great deal and so now this week I get to go get it straight straight again. Everyone always says they want volume and curl not me I want flat lifeless..lol. So my treat this week is getting my hair done. I am very thankful for Lisa and for cutting her price down so much for me. She was right I would hate having the curl back again.

Soccer Time

We have a few weeks of basketball left but no rest because soccer is about to start.

This is the first time we have ever done soccer. I think hubby and I are just so excited that Brae actually is excited about something. First practice was today and 3 times a week from now on. He did really good for his first time to ever do anything to do with soccer. The coaches bragged on him after.

Happy Valentines Day

I know I am posting this a day early but my weekend is looking to be packed full.

I took this pic of the kids in their Valentines outfits.

Hubby and I will get a date. We are leaving straight from Britt's ballgame (I won't get started on how I think it is stupid to have a game that won't even start till 5:30 on Valentines evening.) to go see the play Footloose that is touring. I have never even seen the movie which hubby still can't believe I have never seen it especially since I was such a fan of the movie Dirty Dancing and Grease. Oh well I am really looking forward to the play and time with hubby all to myself. Mom and Dad are taking the kiddos for the night. Yeah for them.

Happy Valentines Day!

What a difference...

What a difference sleep makes.
Yesterday I was cranky and frustrated. Frustrated with medical with Brae, frustrated with home school co-op things, and just people in general.
It was a long day with several activities and by 7:00 I was so tired and cranky. I had been cranky most of the day but by 7:00 there should have been warning signs before you had to come near me.
I went to bed at 8:30 and was out fast. I didn't get up till 6 (which is really sleeping in for me).
I feel SO much better. I feel that I can do research on the medical today, face what comes, that kinda thing. Be a better friend. Put up with crazy people better. Just all around better!
I guess my insomnia had caught up with me and add in the stresser factors of the last few days and I was just done.
Now I am better and ready for what comes. Or at least I think I am at 7:30 this morning by noon I make no promises.

Back to running

Finally I got to get back outside to run yesterday and today.

I started running last May and trained and felt good about the quarter marathon in November. Then I thought it would be a good idea to sign up for the half marathon in April. Never again will I sign up for a spring race. I had no idea how hard it would be to keep up training during the winter.

I hate running indoors. I love to run outside but not when it is 20 degrees. The last two mornings have been super nice at 60 which is perfect running weather I think. Of course temp is suppose to drop again but it was so great being out there again and it has made me excited about the race in April. Of course eek 13.1 miles in about 10 weeks. I am not ready but I don't plan to run the whole thing anyway I will do a walk/run approach but still nervous...and excited.

Much Better

Yesterday Brae accidently got some gluten which made him very sick. First time since we found the celiac disease and went gluten free. It was hard to see him hurting but also I guess it is a good thing because it really brought home how important the diet is and will make it even easier to stick to for Braden. He is like I am going to ask about everything I ever eat again. Today he is much better and keeps saying "I never want to eat gluten ever again".

Quiet

Kids wanted to go to my mom and dad's tonight. Hubby already had plans with his dad to go see a movie that I didn't want to see. I told him to go ahead and go and I would suffer home alone...LOL.

So quiet. I fixed dinner for myself stuff the kids don't like. I ate dessert....yummy and didn't have to share. I caught up on my shows on the dvr. Now I have junk on tv and am just vegging out enjoying the quiet. Trying not to think of all the things I should be doing....I will do those things tomorrow...tonight I am enjoying the quiet.

Wedding recap

We are home from Texas and my cousins wedding. It was wonderful. First off my cousin and his fiance did so much to make Brae feel special and to watch out for his special needs that it was wonderful. Brae was so proud and did a great job. He did his "dying pose" a few times but not during the actual wedding. He did very good. He did this pose when we asked him how he liked wearing a tux.

Here is he is right before the wedding.

Of course he got a gift while we were there that he had been wanting. My aunt got him a star wars helmet....he had to at least try it on with his tux! But luckily he didn't wear it down the aisle..LOL.

Brittney serving dinner at the reception. She had so much fun.

I got so many compliments on both the kids I was really proud.

Here is Brae goofing off with the groom before the wedding.

I have added TONS of pics to flickr.
